CHARACTER STUFF
Name: Miriel Frost
Aliases: Gnosis, the Scientist
Canon: Fire Emblem: Awakening
Role: Wizard/Scientist/Occasional superhero
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 36
Appearance:
Origin story: Throughout her childhood, Miriel showed a proficiency in magic. She first experimented with her powers at a young age, but her science genius mother warned her against it. Miriel, fascinated and intrigued by the lights she could create, practiced behind her mother's back. One day, when she was targeted by bullies after school, she unintentionally sent an arc of fire flying towards them. Some of the bullies were lightly burned, and Miriel was nearly expelled. Her prolific mother was able to keep her in the school, but she gave Miriel a very stern lecture on magic and how she would hurt people if she used it. Wracked with guilt, Miriel listened, and she stopped using magic.
After that, she was more or less left alone by bullies. She had one or two friends throughout her entire childhood and adolescence, since she kept to herself and her studies. She thought about the power she had many times, but she never used it. She graduated at the top of her class, got into and graduated from the best science college, then got a Ph.D. Miriel began working in one of the research divisions at Mintaka Industries. Life was uneventful for years, until Miriel's mother died from illness.
As Miriel soon discovered, her mother had left her, an only child, everything: a large, modern house, plenty of money, and more. As Miriel explored her new house, she discovered a secret room in the library. It contained what appeared to be tons of her mother's research notes...and spellbooks. She delved right into the notes, but steered clear of opening the spellbooks after the initial inspection. The warnings her mother had given her about practicing magic stayed at the front of her mind.
Because of the sheer amount of research her mother had done, it took Miriel several months to get through it all. As she pored through the notes, her curiosity about the arcane realm – which she knew she could access – increased. Her mother outlined many practical uses for magic, such as healing, transmutation, and weather control. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to study magic, this time formally and as a cautious adult. So, she opened the spellbook containing the most basic spells.
Every day after work, Miriel worked her way through the smaller spells. As she mastered those, she moved up to spells of higher levels. In time, she mastered those, and so she began her secret wizard career. This secret wizard career has mostly consisted of studying advanced magic, developing new spells, and using her magic to help people when she needs to. She doesn't consider herself a superhero at all, as she focuses more on her research than aiding people, but she does help out every so often. One of her more notable heroic achievements was conjuring several long rainstorms during a severe drought. Having been contacted by the Enclave a few years back, Miriel is one of their members. She is very secretive about her magical powers when she is acting as Miriel Frost, as she still works at Mintaka Industries during the day and doesn't want to compromise that. (She also doesn't want any co-workers to ask her to conjure coffee for them.) She is just as secretive about her civilian identity when she is acting as a wizard. There are some who know the connection between the two identities, but they are very few trustworthy fellow wizards. She hopes it will stay that way.
Personality: Miriel's immense intelligence influences many of her behaviors. Simply in terms of speech, she has a wide vocabulary that she does not hesitate to use. The way she phrases things is unique. She often sounds like she is making an intellectual observation, even when talking about subjects that are not intellectual at all. This is because Miriel views everything scientifically; she lives and breathes the scientific method and all that comes with it. Though such an attitude – a lifestyle, really – leads to much success in her work and her personal research, it damages her ability to relate to and interact well with other human beings who are not as scientific about everything as she is.
Her detachedness from other people doesn't stem from arrogance, but from a lack of knowledge and natural ability. She tries to be polite when she has reason to be, and she is not unsympathetic to the struggles of others, but she has problems forming a "natural" response. For example, Miriel would someone give her genuine condolences if one of their family members died, but the way she would say it might sound awkward or forced. Not only does she have trouble communicating her emotions, but she also feels that they are unnecessary to bring up and strange in general. She tends to bottle her emotions, since they make her uncomfortable most of the time.
As unemotionally as she tends to behave, she has much respect for those who share common interests and knowledge with her and for those who devote themselves to the noble pursuits of academia and the sciences. When she approves of someone's methods, she lets them know; she gives as many work-related compliments as are deserved. It is rare for someone to get Miriel's full approval, but, at the same time, it is rare to get her full disapproval. She tends to feel more neutral about people than not.
In terms of her fields of expertise, she's as good as they get. She's meticulous, thorough, and a hard worker. She's the type of person who, when faced with a problem she can't solve, will sit there for days until she solves it. (And she will solve it.) As has been implied, she's not the easiest to work with, but she's devoted to her research. Miriel is also extremely organized. You will never find her desk in disarray, and you will always find her cabinets sorted alphabetically. She lives most of her life methodically and in a structured manner, never randomly or casually. She dislikes it when others have disorganization in their lives, their rooms, or their research. With all resources, including magic, Miriel is prudent. She doesn't use what she doesn't need to use.
Miriel's curiosity about the world is what drives her. She wants to know how things work – how everything works, preferably. Her main area of interest is magic, as few have explored that realm, but she will happily learn about most things. She does not fear the unknown. Rather, she welcomes it with the expectation that she will gain knowledge relating to it. Miriel likes challenges. She likes problems that make her think, that require determination and brainpower. There's nothing better than coming to the breakthrough realization after endless hours of thinking. In her mind, that's what makes her a true scientist.
Differences from canon: A big difference is that Miriel has not been involved with the Shepherds in Capital H. She does not have any formal non-work allies, and is not part of a formal superhero-type group. She's taking the route I imagine she would take in canon if she weren't part of the Shepherds: lots of solitary research (along with an actual science research job).
In terms of personality, Miriel is less proficient at dealing with people on a friendly basis than she is in canon. Her life in Capital H so far has been rather lonely, and her canon version, who has lots of people around her, is already not very good at socializing in a "normal" way.
Power level: A
Powers: MAGIC. Miriel has a huge room of spellbooks that she studies meticulously. She specializes in creation magic and magic that deals with particles (transformation magic, more or less), but she has very little skill with magic involving emotions and people. She's mastered many spells in her areas of speciality, a couple of which are hurling bolts of concentrated magic and creating light to illuminate her path. She can teleport herself short-to-medium distances by using magic to disassemble herself and then reassemble herself in a different location (the greater the distance, the more it tires her).
Miriel is also able to use more advanced magic like transmuting base ingredients into a finished product, creating and/or controlling weather/natural disasters (rainstorms, earthquakes, that sort of thing), rearranging atoms and molecules entirely to change something into another thing, etc. Feats like those are achieved only through complex processes involving intricate runes and kind of creepy wizardly chanting. These take considerable time and energy to prepare and execute, so she doesn't use typically use them unless circumstances both demand and allow them. She almost certainly wouldn't use them in battle.
Though Miriel has quite a lot of magical power, can do much damage in a fight, and has a variety of spells at her disposal, her main difficulty is her amount of magical energy. She can't fight long battles, as she becomes too magically drained to cast spells after a certain amount of spells have been cast. The number of spells she can use in succession depends on the level of spell. She can usually cast a fair amount of simple battle spells, but one or two high-level spells are enough for her to be done for a couple of days. Because of this, she would hesitate to target a very powerful supervillain on her own even if she needed to, and, again, she's prudent. If she doesn't have to use magic, she usually will not.
Miriel also has a genius-level intellect. She is able to pick up on a lot of more intellectual and scientific ideas and facts extremely quickly, and she is excellent at problem-solving when it comes to anything not involving people. She's terrible at people.

Notes on the Cactus Growth Experiment
It is time that I evaluate the effect, if any, of magically-infused water on the development of Rat Tail Cactuses. My hypothesis is that the growth of the magically-infused cactus will be hastened, that its flowering will be more robust and substantial, and that said cactus will be significantly healthier than the cactus nourished with standard purified water. I obtained the cactuses today, and so I will be commencing the experiment today. I expect that upon watering the cactuses for the first time, and increasingly as I water them more, the growth rate of the magically-infused cactus will diverge from that of the non-magical cactus. I will be recording the measurements of both cactuses daily.
The possibility of the results of the experiment supporting my hypothesis brings to mind another question: How would a human being grow when nourished only by organisms which had themselves been nourished by magically-infused water? Would one's magical capacity be increased as compared to the version of themselves which lacked magical exposure? Certainly a cactus cannot perform acts of sorcery if exposed to magical energies, but perhaps a human would be able to. It is probable that this will remain conjecture, no matter my results, as performing such an experiment on a human for the duration of their life would be perhaps too challenging for those with the means to do it.
